Silicon Republic: Smart Whale Sounds, A first-of-its-kind project off the coast of Ireland

In partnership with ORCAIreland and supported by Huawei, RFCx has helped launch a first-of-its-kind project to monitor the acoustics of whales, dolphins and porpoises off the southern coast of Ireland. Called “Smart Whale Sounds,” the country’s first real-time acoustic monitoring project of cetacean species involves a two-ton data gathering buoy deployed 9 kilometers off the coast of County Cork, where it will remain for the next year. Sound data collected by the buoy will be used to create machine learning models for marine wildlife detection and classification. This area represents one of world’s most important habitats for cetaceans, who visit the region to rest, forage and reproduce.
